IPAD CUT, COPY & PASTE

The iPad has a great cut, copy and paste feature. This feature enables text and images to be cut, copied and paste from one app to another, so for instance a piece of text can be copied from a web page and paste into an email.

Note: Movies can be cut and paste too but this feature is somewhat hit and miss so is not covered.

Editing Text

To move the cursor touch and hold to bring up the magnifying glass, then drag to position the insertion point. You can insert or delete text from the new insertion point.

From Messages, Notes and Mail open the application you wish to copy text from. To select text tap and hold near the text that you want to select and wait for the magnifying glass to pop open. Let go and the selection pop-up will appear, with the options, 'Select' and 'Select All'. If you click 'Select All' all of the text will be selected. If you click 'Select' you will need to drag the grab points to select more or less text. In both cases another pop-up will appear with 'Cut' and 'Copy'. When you are happy with the selection select either 'Cut' or 'Copy'.

In Safari text can only be copied. Hold your finger on the text you wish to copy and the grab points will appear. Drag the grab points to select more or less text. Select 'Copy' to copy the text.

You can now Paste in any application that will allow pasting, such as Messages, Mail and Notes. To paste position the insertion point by tapping and holding near the insertion point and wait for the magnifying glass to pop open. Drag to the insertion point and let go. A pop up menu will appear with 'Paste' as an option. Click 'Paste' to insert the text. You can select text to replace if you want by selecting it before pasting.

To undo the last edit simply shake your iPad and tap Undo.

Copying and Pasting Photos

You can copy a photo from Photos, Mail or Safari when viewing a web page. In Photos simply hold your finger on the image until the 'Copy' button appears.

In Mail and Safari hold your finger on the image until a menu appears. Select 'Copy' to copy the image to use in another application.

To paste the image open an application that will allow pasting, such as Messages, Mail or Notes and tap to place an insertion point where you want to place the image, then tap the insertion point and tap 'Paste'.

To undo the last edit simply shake your iPad and tap Undo.

Quick Tip

Double-tap a word in Notes or Mail to highlight it with grab points ready to copy.
